Public roadmap

This roadmap provides a high-level directional view of where TabBoy is heading.

Source of truth: Detailed technical planning and contributor tasks live in ROADMAP.md. Real-time progress and implementation issues are tracked directly on our GitHub Issues tracker.

TabBoy’s local-first architecture includes:

  • Local workspace scan: Instant scanning of open windows, tabs, and Chrome tab groups.
  • Rule engine: JSON-based rule engine with Zod schema validation and safety guarantees (no $where, no external code execution).
  • Keyword clustering: Intelligent grouping based on domain and title heuristics without sending data to third parties.
  • Hierarchical collections: Multi-level space and collection hierarchy with nesting, tags, favorites, and drag-and-drop reorganization.
  • Safety net snapshots: Automatic local restore points created before any destructive tab action.
  • Backup & restore: Complete JSON export and conflict-resolved import.

Our primary goal for the initial public release is an exceptionally polished, zero-friction local tab companion:

  • OneTab-style collection capture: Collapse all open tabs into a collection with a single click.
  • Tab navigation & workspace mood: Clear visual indication of workspace load and fast open-tab search.
  • Collection management: Drag & drop organization, instant search, tag filtering, and Space roots.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Global browser commands and an integrated in-app command palette (Cmd/Ctrl+K).
  • Comprehensive Trust pages: Help Center documentation, Data Location details, and Support channels.

Future updates planned after the V1 public release include:

  • Root collection switching (V1.1): Seamless context switching between root Spaces with live state preservation.
  • Opt-in New Tab experience: Strictly optional new tab dashboard for direct access to spaces and search.
  • Tab Map visual graph (Conditional): Exploring visual graph relationships between research tabs and collections.
  • TabBoy Pro (Optional & Hosted): Optional, opt-in cloud synchronization and AI workspace enrichment via FlowCrate, without ever compromising local-first capabilities for free users.
